How Does Laser Dentistry Benefit Patients?
September 13, 2017
Laser aren’t just good for space-age weaponry in sci-fi movies anymore. Today, numerous professionals use lasers to complete tasks with greater precision. Contractors use laser levels to quickly check their work for any signs of shifting or canting. Eye doctors use lasers to restore 20/20 vision. Dentists are also taking advantage of high tech dental lasers in order to provide patients with safe, comfortable, precision dentistry services.
The Laser Dentistry Treatment Process
Dentists can perform a number of soft tissue treatments using dental lasers. Traditionally, these procedures required the use of scalpels and sutures, which could be uncomfortable, lead to reinfection, and cause excessive bleeding during treatment. Dental lasers, allow us to remove, reshape, or sterilize soft tissue with little to no discomfort before, during, or after treatment. We simply apply the low heat laser light to the exact tissue we wish to remove or sterilize, and as the laser cuts through the tissue, the treated area is automatically cauterized to promote healing.
Procedures Possible Using Dental Lasers
We perform the following treatments using soft tissue lasers:
- Deep cleaning – beneficial for patients suffering from gum disease and those at risk for gum disease
- Scaling – removal of built up plaque and tartar at and below the gum line
- Root planing – smoothing of tooth roots to prevent future plaque and tartar buildup
- Gum recontouring – removal of excessive or uneven gum tissue to create a flawless smile line
- Crown lengthening – removal of some gum tissue to reveal adequate tooth structure to provide support for a dental crown or other restoration
Benefits of Laser Dentistry
As you’ve likely gathered, laser dentistry has a number of benefits for dentists and patients alike. Some of the many benefits of completing soft tissue procedures using laser dentistry include:
- Comfort during treatment means little to no anesthesia or dental sedation is necessary
- Minimal bleeding during and after procedures
- Reduced risk for infection following treatment
- Shorter healing time, typically fully healed within 48 hours of treatment
- More conservative treatment allows us to preserve the greatest amount of healthy gum tissue
