Porcelain Veneers – A Simple Solution for a Cracked Tooth
January 4, 2018
To say that the condition of your teeth is important is an understatement, because the reality is that it defines you and dictates how other people will respond in your presence. Studies verify this, as 73% of Americans would be more likely to trust someone with a nice smile, than a person with a good job, outfit or car, all three considered to be status symbols within our society. So for people to express that the beam of perfect teeth is more important than the items listed, is monumental. It also means that when you are challenged in this area, it can cause a great deal of anxiety. That’s why your dentist has decided to reveal a simple method to mask issues like a gapped, stained or cracked tooth. The remedy is porcelain veneers. Read on to learn why it’s a go-to solution for perfecting smiles.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are thin shell-like strips of porcelain that fit right over your enamel and are used to mask imperfections like gaps, chips, misalignments and stained teeth. Typically a two to three visit process, the path to your new smile starts with an initial consultation to discuss your desires and for your dentist to assess your skin tone, the shape and features of your face.
You’ll also be fitted with a temporary set of veneers to wear at your first visit. While you’re in them, a ceramist will be fabricating your custom veneers, which you’ll be fitted with at your next visit.
Two Types of Veneers
A factor that will determine how your porcelain veneers will be affixed, is the type of application that your dentist determines is the best for you. The two basic kinds are:
- Traditional Veneers – This method will be recommended for most people and involves prepping your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel so that the new veneers will affix properly.
- Non-Prep – The non-prep veneer option doesn’t require any enamel removal but is reserved only for people with minimal imperfections.
How Long Will My Veneers Last?
Your new veneers can last on average between 10 and 15 years. But just like your normal teeth, the great determinate of their longevity is your ability to care for them properly. Here are some ways to increase their lifespan:
- Oral Hygiene – Brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day still reign supreme when it comes to oral care. These two activities help to remove harmful bacteria that seek to eat through tooth enamel and cause decay.
- Don’t Use Your Teeth as Tools – Your teeth are meant to chew food only. It’s very dangerous to use them as tools to twist bottle tops, bite nails and open packages. Not only can these activities damage your veneers, but can also lead to a dental emergency.
- Teeth Grinding – Grinding your teeth can cause advanced wear to your veneers and can also lead to a dental emergency if not addressed, as it can encourage cracks and other issues.
Having porcelain veneers adhered to your teeth should be an exciting time in your life, and by applying the information you now have, you can be sure to get the longevity and total fulfillment that this process has to offer.
