Refreshing Restorations: 3 Signs You Need New Veneers
October 5, 2024
Veneers continue to gain popularity as a versatile solution that can address one or several aesthetic issues in your teeth. Whether you’re frustrated by chips, cracks, stubborn stains, or mild crookedness or gaps, your dentist can enhance your appearance with these customized prosthetics.
Although they can last 20+ years if cared for correctly, these shells aren’t necessarily considered “permanent” because you may have to replace them at some point. If you’re unsure whether you need new veneers, read on to learn about three signs that let you know it’s time!
Indicator #1: Surface Damage
These restorations are made from durable porcelain coated with a glaze strong enough to resist a certain amount of damage and discoloration. However, that doesn’t mean they’re invincible. Over time, they can sustain injuries or become worn down from daily use. You might develop anxiety if they no longer look good, and you’re worried about being judged for the condition of your smile. Replacing your veneers can boost your confidence and help you feel like the best version of yourself.
Indicator #2: Receding Gumline
When your veneers were initially placed, your dentist removed a thin layer of enamel. This allowed them to lay your prosthetics flush against your gums without looking overly bulky. Unfortunately, the slightly weakened enamel leaves the underlying tooth somewhat more prone to decay and disease. If you’ve developed progressive periodontal problems, your connective tissues will start to pull away from your enamel to escape the infection. This leaves your veneers (and your teeth!) without the firm foundation they need to stay put, and they could fall out.
If you’ve noticed that your gumline looks uneven or that more of your tooth is visible, it’s time to call your dentist.
Indicator #3: Cavities
Although your restorations cannot develop cavities, the underlying tooth they cover still can. It’s essential that you brush and floss twice daily to keep your teeth, gums, and veneers clear of plaque and bacteria. Otherwise, you could end up with tooth decay that compromises the structure of your pearly whites. If left unaddressed, caries can spread to neighboring teeth or your jawbone, causing oral issues in addition to losing your cosmetics. Your dentist can work with you to fill in cavities to ensure that your prosthetics remain in place.
Paying attention to the state of your smile allows you to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as you notice signs of trouble. If you’ve spotted any of these issues, a quick consultation can let you know whether your veneers need to be replaced!
